A few weeks ago eagle-eyed BMW fans spotted this hard-core M4 leaving the firm’s Nurburgring workshop. That sparked rumours that a more focussed, track-biased M4 is on its way. Well it seems that we may soon see a BMW M2 CSL as well.

Spotted at the ’Ring

A few days ago this BMW M2 was seen undergoing dynamic testing at the Nurburgring. The M2 Competition is already available, which means that this model is probably a level above that car.

Performance cues that we can see in the images include a larger front splitter balanced by a bigger aerofoil on the boot lid, lightweight alloys as used on M4 CS models (probably wrapped in sticky semi-slick rubber) and massive brake discs with equally large calipers front and rear.

If the external cues are anything to go by then we wouldn’t be surprised if the car featured a faster-acting steering and revised spring/damper rates, too.

Lightweight and more power

If it is to live up to the hallowed CSL badge then the apex 2 Series would require more power and a bit of a diet. Previous CSL models, such as the E46 M3, have featured lots of lightweight carbon-fibre in place of metal, not to mention the omission of certain creature comforts such are air-conditioning and infotainment systems.

The BMW M2 Competition already uses the M3/M4’s powerplant, so we don’t expect a massive power bump. If the M2 CSL were to produce too much power it would start to step on the toes of its bigger brother and BMW customers wouldn’t be too happy with that.
