Wagoneers

Audi has been a long-time proponent of station wagons. It has a tradition of producing these long-roof models that have been the objects of petrolheads’ desires. Check out the video at the bottom of this post to see some of the past hits. It is no surprise then to see that the latest concept car from the Four Rings takes this shape.

The Audi A6 Avant E-tron concept car is based on a new PPE platform that the press materials says “will be successively unveiled starting in 2023.” This means it will underpin future EVs due to the market pretty soon. This sleek new design has a new look face, which could be a preview of upcoming E-tron models. The profile is dominated by 22-inch wheels and plenty of convex and concave surfacing. At nearly five metres long it’s no shrinking violet.

Powered up

Under the show car appearance is 800V architecture. This means that it can recharge from 5 to 80 per cent in less than 25 minutes. In ten minutes, the car recovers 300 km of charge. The total range for the A6 Avant E-tron concept is above 700 km.

Two motors provide the A6 Avant E-tron with 350 kW and 800 N.m of torque. Interestingly there is no direct mention of any performance claims. However, the press materials say that “even entry-level models designed for efficiency will accelerate to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds. And in the top-of-the-line, high-performance models, this sprint can even be reduced to well under four seconds.” That gives us a clear indication that the model is heading for volume production.

In his own words

“With the Audi A6 Avant E-tron concept, we are offering a completely tangible look at future production models on our new PPE technology platform,” says Audi board member Oliver Hoffmann. “We’re not just electrifying the Avant’s successful 45-year history. What we want most of all is to use technical skill to add an exclamation point. In particular, this includes powerful 800-volt technology, 270 kW of charging capacity, and a WLTP range of up to 700 kilometres.”
