A few weeks ago BMW unveiled the all-new 5 Series sedan. BMW South Africa has already given us an indication of which derivatives are heading our way. You can read our original article by clicking this link. Before we’ve even seen the impending M5 performance halo, the company has already confirmed that a BMW M5 Touring will be part of the range.

Hiding In Plain Sight

It makes sense that BMW has chosen to release this info, and the images you see above. Unlike most other derivatives, where you can simply hide the engine or ‘special bits’ in a cooking variety car, the same can’t be done with an M5 Touring.

Not a First

Of course, this isn’t the first M5 Touring to be produced by BMW. From 1992 BMW produced 891 examples of the second-gen M5 in Touring guise. The fourth-gen M5 received the same treatment. The E61 M5 Touring had the company’s high-revving V10 engine. It optionally had a top speed of 305 km/h.

Hybrid Power

It has been reported that the upcoming M5 Touring will be powered by a hybrid system. That was confirmed by Dirk Häcker, head of development at BMW M GmbH, “We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars.”

The powertrain is a twin-turbocharged V8 with a plug-in hybrid system. Peak power is rumoured to be north of 500 kW along with 800 N.m of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission will deliver power to all four wheels. The powertrain is similar to that found in the BMW XM SUV.
