Our European correspondent Nick van der Meulen attended the 2022 Ollon-Villars International Motor Race this past weekend. He sent us a few words and shot the photos you see in the gallery below.

The 8th Historic Hillclimb took place on 20-21 August 2022. It is, usually, an event that occurs every three years. The event was postponed from 2021 to this year due to Covid restrictions. The timed runs take place on a winding road between the Swiss towns of Ollon and Villars.

The route itself is historic, as it formed part of the European Hillclimb championship until 1971. It starts in Ollon, known for its vineyards, and winds up the mountain to Villar, a well-known ski resort. The road is narrow, winding through picturesque landscape, which the drivers have scant time to appreciate.

A Demo Run

This year’s event was more of a demonstration run, however, this did not detract enthusiasts from attending. The weekend began in poor weather conditions, with low clouds and steady rain. By Saturday afternoon, however, the rain stopped and the clouds began to lift. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, allowing spectators to meet and chat with owners and drivers.

About 200 historic cars, motorcycles and sidecars were entered in the event. Each took to the hill four times during the race weekend. Highlights included the 1973 Shadow DN1 Formula 1 machine and Jo Siffert’s 1970 Gulf Porsche 917 piloted by his son Philippe. The 1920s and ’30s were well represented at the event, with a 1926 Maserati 26M, a 1937 Bugatti Type 37A, the 1960 Maserati Typo 61 “Birdcage” and a 1930 Stutz being particular highlights.

Show-stealer

There were some attractive motorcycles at the event, but the presence of Giacomo Agostini stole the show. The 15-time world champion was in fine fettle and rode his championship-winning 1965 MV Agusta, to rapturous applause from the crowds. Triple F1 world champion Jackie Stewart was also present. The Scot was driving a beautiful 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB.

It was an extremely enjoyable event at a picturesque venue and it is certainly worthwhile attending. You can find more information at https://www.ollon-villars.com
