Many manufacturers will be sending out press releases in the next few days claiming to win the prestigious International Engine of the Year awards. In reality, there is only one winner, in 2018 the accolade goes to the 3,9-litre turbocharged Ferrari V8.

Multiple winner

The 2018 title makes it three in a row for Ferrari with the same engine. The twin-turbo V8 is employed in various Ferrari’s V8-engined models, most notably in the track-focussed 488 Pista. This new variant was launched at the Geneva Motor Show earlier in 2018. In its latest guise the engine makes 588 kW along with 770 N.m of torque.

Along with the overall title the engine also claimed the 3,0-litre to 4,0-litre class, the Performance Engine category and the special nomination for the ‘Best of the Best’.

“In the 488 GTB, the 3,9-litre eight-cylinder was a near-perfect example of a high-performance turbocharged engine, setting the bar so high that it swept aside rival powertrains,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the IEOTY Awards. “But redeveloped and tweaked for the 488 Pista, the best engine in the world just got better. Without doubt, we’re looking at an engineering masterclass from Ferrari. No turbo lag, beautiful delivery, raw emotion, a furious growl and so much power – this Ferrari V8 is a work of art.”

More recognition

Ferrari claimed two more titles with its 6,5-litre V12 as used in the 812 SuperFast, in the best new engine class and the above 4,0-litre class. Company founder Enzo Ferrari would be proud.
