Toyota is on something of a performance offensive. The Japanese automaker competes in many top-flight motorsport series. But it also has a proud heritage, which includes the Celica GT-Four rally car. This Toyota GR86 Rally Legacy Concept was created as an homage to that car.

The GR86 Rally Legacy Concept is a testament to Toyota’s enduring passion for rally racing. We did this build for our GR and Toyota Rally fans—it’s a fantasy car come to life, our way of celebrating our past achievements and the possibility of the World Rally Championship making a return to the United States.

SEMA Show Car

The Toyota GR86 Rally Legacy Concept was built for the 2024 SEMA show which starts later this week. It draws inspiration from the iconic ST185 and ST205 Celica GT-Four rally vehicles of yester-year. As a result it wears the famous colours of those earlier machines.

The external appearance is set off by a quartet of circular driving lamps on the bonnet. Additionally, there are rally-style alloys, increased ground clearance and a rounded wing on the rear. A set of oversized rear mud flaps complete the look. The features racing seats and harnesses and has been pared back of all mod-cons.

New Powertrain

The Toyota GR86 Rally Legacy Concept has a new powertrain, to keep the rally theme. Toyota engineers removed the naturally aspirated 2,4-litre boxer engine. In its place is the same engine normally found in the GR Corolla. The 1,6-litre turbocharged triple has been transplanted here along with its all-wheel-drive system. The engine has benefitted from a host of upgrades. These include a performance intercooler and an oil cooler to reduce engine oil temps. The concept car maintains the GR Corolla’s power and torque (221 kW/360 N.m). However, a standalone management system can help with a power bump.
