Earlier this year Toyota pulled the wraps off its latest small sportscar, dubbed the GR86; where GR stands for Gazoo Racing. This is the continuation of the GT86 line that we know so well. As the Japanese firm builds its performance offerings the company has just shown GR parts for the GR86

What we already know

The Toyota GR86 still has a horizontally opposed four cylinder engine like its predecessor. The naturally aspirated motor has grown from 2,0- to 2,4 litres. Peak engine speed is rated as 7 400 r/min which helps maximum power rise to 173 kW with 250 N.m of torque available at 3 700 r/min. Toyota says the GR86 can now sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 6,3 seconds, a 1,1 second improvement over the outgoing model.

As before buyers can choose between a six-speed manual (check out our Be The Change manual shift pattern T-shirt at this link) or six-speed automatic transmission that is connected to the rear wheels. The Toyota GR86 is suspended on MacPherson struts up front and a racecar-like double wishbone rear set-up. The new model will go on sale in SA during 2022.

Custom appearance

From the launch of the GT86 Toyota was keen to have owners customise their cars. The same seems to be true of the GR86. The company has just released GR parts for the GR86 that will help give the new car a more defined appearance and add some juicy performance upgrades. Two versions of the GR86 were shown a few days ago; one called the GR Parts and the other referred to as the GR Parts Concept. The former is more understated while the latter seems like a tuner special.

Those who prefer to be seen will enjoy the GR Parts Concept. The company release says that these parts are used for development. Among the additions are a front spoiler and canards on the bumper, a large inlet on the upper part of the grille and air outlets on the front fenders. In profile you can see the deeper side skirts 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and a massive, racecar-like wing. The latter works with the rear diffuser that features large vertical fins to generate downforce.

The more subtle car has several styling bits, including front canards, side skirts, fender duct fin, rear bumper spoiler with four exhaust tips, fuel flap cover, and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels. From a performance perspective both cars have a suspension kit and larger monoblock brakes.
