In the very early part of 2021 Toyota South Africa announced an expansion to its existing Corolla range. The Quest, Sedan and Hatch will be joined by a fourth body style, that of a crossover, called the Cross (read our original story here). Now the local subsidiary has announced the Toyota Corolla Cross range and pricing when it goes on sale in less than two months
Five derivative line up
The Corolla Cross range will be available with two engines and in three trim levels. Two versions of a petrol-fed 1,8-litre four cylinder engine will be available from November. The naturally aspirated 1,8-litre develops 103 kW along with 172 N.m of torque. Higher up in the range the 1,8-litre engine, with an emphasis on fuel efficiency, features a hybrid component for a total system output of 90 kW. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is the only option in the new range.
Three trim levels Xi, Xs and Xr will be familiar to most fans of the brand. Xi is the entry-level version. A step up is the Xs grade and the top of the family is the Xr. Standard specification on all versions includes colour coding, keyless entry, power-adjustable and auto-retractable exterior mirrors, LED taillamps and automatic light control. In the cabin occupants are privy to 60/40 fold-down rear seats, remote controls on the steering, cruise control, air-conditioning, 12-volt power outlet, all-round one-touch power windows and a touchscreen multi-media interface.
Peace of mind
To make the Toyota Corolla Cross range attractive to prospective buyers Toyota SA includes driver, passenger, side and driver-knee airbags (on Xi & Xs) plus curtain airbags on the Xr. Active safety features include: VSC, ABS, EBD and Hill Assist Control (HAC). All new Cross models will come with a six-services/90 000 km service plan and a three-year/100 000 km warranty as standard.
