Formula 1 was all set for the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix this coming weekend. However, the sport’s commercial rights holder has announced that the Grand Prix will not continue as planned. This call has come due to the unprecedented flooding in the northern parts of Italy.

The harsh weather conditions have been destructive over the last week, with emergency services having their hands full. The local governments in Italy placed a stay-at-home order late last week, warning locals of the upcoming weather conditions.

Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, said: “It is such a tragedy to see what has happened to Imola and Emilia-Romagna, the town and region that I grew up in, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the flooding and the families and communities affected.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: “My thoughts and those of the entire FIA family are with those affected by the terrible situation in the Emilia-Romagna region. The safety of everyone involved and recovery efforts are the top priority at this time.”

Due to the weather and current condition of the region, Formula 1 decided to cancel the Grand Prix so that they don’t add any further pressure on local authorities and emergency services.

While fans may be disappointed by the cancellation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, safety of locals in the area should always be prioritised. This cancellation effectively reduces the 23-race calendar to 22 races. Additionally, it gives the teams an extra week to work on their cars before Monaco.

Mercedes Upgrades Delayed

Mercedes were preparing to bring a massive upgrade to Imola. This upgrade included a new front suspension, new sidepods, and a new floor. Some rumours speculated that the upgrade could help them find half a second on track. These upgrades will have to wait until Monaco, a notoriously tricky track that may not give them the data they’re looking for.
