The Mini Cooper is one of the most loved little cars on the road. From little kids to grandpas, we’re all fans of the British creation. But some are bigger fans than others. Gildred Racing has an almost unhealthy obsession with the original and they have created, what could be termed, the ultimate Mini, called the Super Cooper Type S.

Mini madness

The California-based outfit plies its trade on the original Mini, not the more recent hatchback versions as made under BMW ownership. For years the company has been revitalising and upgrading the small cars. Their work is as simple as a restoration or the range-topping madness you see here.

RWD rocket

Gildred Racing takes a regular Mk3 Mini and junks the motor. A Honda V6 is shoehorned behind the front seats. But they don’t stop with a stock motor. The engine is then fitted with uprated pistons and conrods as well as a Rotrex supercharger. The force-fed unit is good for 375 kW and 520 N.m of torque. Those are massive figures when you consider the car weighs under 700 kg. The fuel tank, cooling system and intercooler are placed within the car’s engine bay.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox fitted with a limited-slip differential. The final link in the power transmission chain is a set of Toyo R888 semi-slick tyres. Braking duties are handled by Wilwood four-pot calipers on vented rotors on the front wheels.

Custom interior

The interior of the Super Cooper Type S receives a thorough modernisation as well. It features a pair of heated and cooled Recaro bucket seats with harnesses, an Apple Ipad Pro, Alpine stereo, button start, central locking, electric windows, and electronic air-conditioning.

Gildred Racing already has one Super Cooper Type S and they will build a further nine to order. By today’s rand/dollar exchange rate each one will cost a whopping R2,5 milliYON. And that’s before you try to import it here…
