It has taken some time but the all-new Renault Megane RS has landed on local soil. The new model is the current range-topper of the family, until more hardcore versions of the same car arrive in due course. Click here to read about the Megane RS Trophy.

New motor

A new generation 1,8-litre turbo engine is the headliner here. The direct-injection unit delivers 205 kW of peak power at 6 000 r/min and peak torque of 390 N.m is available from 2 400-4 800 r/min.

Thankfully Renault continues to offer this RS model with a six-speed manual gearbox. If that’s too much work for you there is the option of an EDC dual-clutch transmission. This is the first time Renault has offered an automated option in the Megane RS. The EDC variant comes with steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles. Each transmission is linked to a trim level: Megane RS Cup (manual) and Megane RS Lux (EDC).

Different driving modes are accessible via Renault’s Multi-Sense system. Each mode affects the drivetrain in different ways. In the EDC model, comfort and normal allow for smooth gear changes, without any jerking; sport mode has quicker gear changes with amplified engine noise; race mode has even quicker gear changes. In sport and race modes, the EDC transmission also allows multiple downshifts and features launch control. Owners can also pick and choose their favourite bits from each mode and save it for quick access later.

Overt cues

A wide air intake in the front bumper an F1-style front blade and a 3D honeycomb-pattern grill mesh warn slower traffic ahead of the RS’ arrival. Wing-mounted air outlets optimise air flow through the wheel arches. A rear spoiler improves aerodynamic performance while a built-in diffuser in the rear bumper aids aero stability.

Megane RS models feature wider fenders, by 60 mm at the front and 45 mm at the back, and a lower ride height. As befitting a performance model the alloys measure 18- or 19-inches. Hiding inside those alloys are Brembo brake calipers. The front brake discs measure increased to 355 mm.

Tuned to suit

As has become commonplace with RenaultSport RS models, buyers can choose between two suspension set-ups: Sport and Cup. Each brings with tailoring of the springs, shock absorbers, bump stops and anti-roll bar stiffness. The more hardcore Cup option offers 10 per cent stiffer dampers and, quite notably, a Torsen mechanical, limited slip differential.
