While some manufacturers conduct a model refresh or “facelift” every few years, others stick with a tried and trusted recipe. This must mean that Suzuki got the Jimny right from the start as it’s been 20 years since the current model went on sale.

The new Suzuki Jimny is set for its world launch on July 5, but these images have been posted to the company’s global site.

Old, but new

Considering the success of the current Jimny – over 2,85 million units have been sold worldwide – Suzuki designers have stuck pretty close to the theme of the current model.

The external appearance is boxy with tight dimensions. An off-centre roof-mounted aerial and rear door-mounted spare wheel are nods to its past.

Plastic wheel-arch extensions and contrasting, two-tone colour schemes add a level of butchness to the higher-spec versions.

A step up

If the outside has maintained an old-ish appearance the interior has been somewhat refreshed. A large full-colour touchscreen sits atop the facia and the steering wheel features remote controls.

Exposed Allen-head bolts and large rotary dials add to the chunkiness and utilitarian nature of the new Jimny.

Keeping it real

The Suzuki Jimny has always been lauded for its go-anywhere capability. This looks set to continue as an image from the site reveals that the ladder frame chassis remains, as does the all-wheel-drive system.

It is expected that the new Jimny will be powered by Suzuki’s 1,5 litre naturally aspirated inline four-cylinder engine.
