Every weekend there are plenty of headlines from the world of motorsport. But we believe this should be the highlight of the decade. Loek Hartog stopped to rescue British driver after crash caused the latter’s car to burst into flames during a recent GT race in China.

Unlucky Timing

British driver Ollie Millroy was sideswiped in an accident that involved two other rivals. The incident caused the Brit’s Ferrari to immediately burst into flames. Quick-thinking Hartog was one of the first cars to arrive at the scene and immediately stopped to help his stricken rival. The 23-year old commented on a social media post:

“When I saw a car turning into a huge fireball far ahead, there wasn’t really a decision to make. From what I had seen, I genuinely believed the driver might not be able to get out by himself. I stopped, got out, and went towards the car. There was never a moment of doubt. It was terrifying, and there were moments when I didn’t know if I’d ever manage to get Ollie out. But it’s not about what I did; I’m sure many people in my position would have reacted exactly the same way.”

In the face of danger

In the video below you can see Hartog arrive on the scene, jump out of his own car and rush to the fiery Ferrari. He tried to pull Millroy out from the passenger side, but that was not possible. He ran to the nearest marshal, grabbed a fire extingusher and tried to douse the flames to get to his rival. He can finally be seen grabbing Millroy and dragging him away from the flaming wreck.

“I owe my life to you,” Millroy wrote on his Instagram. “Loek Hartog stopped instantly with no flag marshals or fire crews in sight, and risked his own life to get me out of the car. I don’t remember anything between 30 seconds before the crash and 1 hour after it, but … I will remember his incredible act of bravery for the rest of my life.

“One day I will tell our three kids this story and Loek will be the biggest superhero in history in their eyes too. I’m laying here tonight with 5 broken ribs, broken collar bone, broken hand and finger and a bruised lung, but it could have been much worse. Thank you Loek.”
