Racing game franchise Need for Speed (NFS) has had many memorable titles over the past 26 years but 2010’s Hot Pursuit, developed by Criterion Games, is the first to be remastered – a decade after its initial release. The upcoming title will be called Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered.

The original was the third NFS to feature the Hot Pursuit moniker, with the first appearing on PC and the original PlayStation in 1998, and the next (Hot Pursuit 2) released in 2002 on the Xbox as well. But this was before the series was turned on its head while exploring the import scene and trying more of a sim-like feel.

Double agent

After a few years of being inspired by the rise of the tuner culture, primarily thanks to the Fast and Furious franchise, NFS returned to its roots of sportscars, concepts and hypercars with the added thrill of having to deal with pesky traffic police in equally fast machinery with Hot Pursuit in 2010.

You essentially play both sides of the law; trying to work your way up the illegal racing rankings of the fictional US state of Seacrest County by racking up ‘bounty’, while simultaneously picking up enforcement missions along the way trying to bust racers and become a top cop. While outrunning the police is something most of us have probably only fantasised about, we’d never dream of arresting illegal racers using roadblocks, spike strips, weaponised electromagnetic pulses, and pursuit choppers. If you don’t get your man (or woman) with the tech at your disposal, you can always resort to classic ramming.

Hot metal

When it was released, Hot Pursuit featured some of the hottest exotics available like the Aston Martin One-77, Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, Pagani Zonda Cinque and Porsche 911 GT2 RS, while downloadable content included some serious unobtanium along the likes of Lamborghini’s Sesto Elemento. Thankfully, Hot Pursuit Remastered includes all the previous DLC packs.

It was also one of the best-looking games of the previous generation, with some scenery that served as inspiration for the 2014 film Need for Speed. Expect even better visuals and a multiplayer mode that supports cross-platform play on Hot Pursuit Remastered. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered will launch on 6 November for   version following on 13 November.
