Free Rein Faroe Islands is the latest drift video by Ford Performance driver Vaughn Gittin Jr. The self-proclaimed ‘fun-haver’ has been the star of several drifting videos (as you can see here) but none will compare to his latest.

Far off lands

Gittin Jr travelled by air, sea, and land to get to the Faroe Islands where he has (you guessed it) free rein of the place. For those who skipped out on geography class the Faroe Islands lie almost exactly between Scotland, Norway and Iceland. The scenic islands are considered one of Earth’s most geographically exciting and remote places. There are a total of five traffic lights and a higher population of sheep than people.

In this unique landscape Vaughn visited a variety of breathtaking sites including a subsea roundabout and drifting the extremely tight and technical roads of the wild landscape. There are some cheesy bits, like the car communicating with Vaughn a la Knight Rider and a weird ‘dream sequence’, but there are some great action scenes and beautiful drone footage. Gittin Jr’s steed for this adventure is the Mustang Mach-E 1400.

Battery power

The Mustang Mach-E 1400 was built by Ford Performance and Vaughn’s company RTR to demonstrate the performance possibilities of electric drivetrains. It is the result of 10 000 hours of collaboration by Ford Performance and RTR. It is the second such project after the 1 000 kW electric Mustang drag car, which you can read about here.

This rolling test-bed and slide machine is powered by seven motors that deliver a combined 1 045 kW (1400 hp). Three motors are attached to the front differential and four are mated to the rear, that’s right, it has seven motors. Power delivery to the diffs is adjustable to set the car up for everything from rear-wheel-, to all-wheel- to front-wheel drive. Power delivery can be split evenly between front and rear, or completely to one or the other.

In his own words

“Performance driving in a BEV [Battery Electric Vehicle] is an exhilarating experience I never  knew I needed,” said Gittin Jr. “Every time I get behind the wheel of the Mustang Mach-E 1400 I  am smiling ear to ear from the entire experience. It’s an entirely new and different experience  from my other Mustangs that I love being behind the wheel of! Harnessing the power of this  beast has taken some seat time as the instant power is truly something incredible, you can see some of the intensity in my eyes, especially on the Funningur road drift section. That was nuts!”
