If ever we needed convincing that the electric-car wave is well and truly upon us, it comes in the shape of the all-new Ford Mustang Mach-E. The newcomer from the Blue Oval is an all-electric model that uses a name once reserved for the famous muscle car.

Powertrains

In base trim, the Mustang Mach-E offers 248 kW and 565 N.m of peak torque. This model is targeting 0-100 km/h time of around five seconds. A more powerful Mach-E GT is aiming for a sub-four-second for that benchmark sprint thanks to 342 kW and 830 N.m of torque. Mustang Mach-E will be available with standard and extended-range battery options when it goes on sale next year. Drive is by either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive powered by permanent magnet motors. Equipped with an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive, Mustang Mach‑E has a targeted pure-electric driving range of roughly 600 km.

Mach-E will offer three drive modes – Whisper, Engage and Unbridled. Each is said to offer a finely tuned driving dynamics packaged. Features include sportier steering controls, ambient lighting, sounds tuned for an authentic all-electric experience, and dynamic cluster animations that are tied to driving behaviour.

A new age

For the first time in over half a century, the Mustang badge will be used on something other than a sportscar. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an SUV that has been conceived to be electrically powered from day one. Not only is it battery powered but the newcomer ushers in a new era of connectivity for the brand.

Ford’s next-generation SYNC communications and entertainment system makes its debut in the Mach-E. A modern interface uses machine learning to quickly learn drivers’ preferences and gets even better over time, thanks to advanced over-the-air updates. The system is accessed by a 15,5-inch screen with touch, swipe and pinch controls that every smartphone owner will be comfortable using. The system also features cloud-based connectivity and conversational voice recognition.
