Double Apex was invited to attend the inaugural Tutto Bene Hillclimb in Italy.

Hillclimb events seem to be gaining popularity. They don’t require a specific facility and just about any vehicle can compete. There are the more competitive events, such as Pikes Peak and our own Simola Hillclimb. There are, however, more social versions such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Tutto Bene Hillclimb falls into the latter category. Double Apex was invited to attend the inaugural event that took place last week.

It’s All Good

Tutto Bene means ‘all good’ in English, and that is an apt description of this gathering. The event was the brainchild of Milanese automotive consultancy and styling house BorromeodeSilva and US-based events specialists Race Service. The venue was Mottarone Adventure Park. The seasonal ski resort is set high on the hills above Lago Maggiore about an hour north of Milan. The two companies envisioned a motorsport gathering with a strong social component, the likes of Goodwood FoS, with the underlying theme being cool cars. Indeed, the invite that went out to potential participants stated just that, “Cool cars only”. And boy was the brief fulfilled.

Diverse Array

The staging area was a complete smorgasbord of performance and classic motoring. There were so many spectacular cars in the same place, that we had no idea where to look. Truly a petrolhead’s nirvana. There were over fifty interesting machines in attendance, the likes of which we have written about on this site, but not seen in the flesh before. Goosebumps…

There were several rally machines such as Subarus, a Ford RS200 and Lancia Deltas, the latter included the Delta Futurista restomod. The Porsche brand seemed to dominate proceedings with 911s from just about every decade, including a rare 901. There were a few Ferraris, including a slip-sliding 812 Competizione Aperta and a Daytona SP3. Rarely seen machines included two Dallara Stradales, a road-going KTM X-bow GT-XR and a Diablo GTR. Our favourites included the Lanzante 930, that’s the car with the genuine F1 TAG turbo engine, and a screaming Maserati MC12.

Chilled Out

Guests travelled from as far as California, Hong Kong, and Australia’s Gold Coast, while we proudly represented South Africa. Together, we engaged in fascinating conversations and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow petrolheads from around the globe.

The main viewing area was the old train station, Bar Stazione, about halfway up the run. There we got to enjoy endless pasta, gelato and retro/Italo-pop tunes as we enjoyed the sunshine filtering through the canopy of trees and the constant sight of high performance machines whizzing up the hill. There were more cars on display at Bar Stazione. These included the Nardone 928, HWA Evo and a mean-looking Alfa Romeo 155 DTM racer.

Onwards and… Upwards

The inaugural Tutto Bene Hillclimb was extremely well received, leaving attendees with a positive impression of the event. With no timed runs and no winners to be crowned, the focus was on enjoyment and camaraderie. As the day came to a close, drivers and guests gathered for a late afternoon aperitivo, taking in the stunning vista of the lake below. Tutto Bene, indeed!
