When you are as large and influential as US motoring media house Motor Trend, you get to do some pretty cool stuff. The title has been throwing together incredible multi-car drag races for many years now. This year, as part of their best driver’s car shootout, they have introduced the Best Driver’s Car GP.

Wheel-to-wheel action

Unlike most other car track videos, that features one car on track at a time setting a lap, this Best Driver’s Car GP has six high-performance machines on the circuit all at the same time, going wheel-to-wheel for glory. The cars that made the list were: Ford Mustang Shelby GT350, Toyota GR Supra, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, Jaguar XE SV Project 8, Porsche 911 Carrera S and McLaren 600LT.

Of all these, the Supra is the only one we have first-hand experience of. You can read our driving impression at this link.

The driver’s line-up consisted of two-time 24 Hours of Daytona winner Randy Pobst, champion drifter Chris Forsberg, Polish TV host and petrolhead Patrick Mikiciuk, German actor Axel Stein, multiple champion Marino Franchitti and presenter/auto journalist Jethro Bovingdon, who is a two-time class winner at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring.

The venue for this motoring mayhem was the world-famous Laguna Seca Raceway in California. Qualifying took the form of a drift-off between the assembled wheelmen, and the starting order was a reverse grid ie slowest car at the front and quickest car at the back… by some margin. The drivers were given three laps to see how they would perform against each other in such different machinery. The exercise was a brave one, which, thankfully, they managed to pull off successfully. It now seems that this will be an annual event hosted by Motor Trend – cool!
