Double Apex receives many invites during the course of a year. In 2022 we attended over 20 motoring events all over SA. These included the BMW M Fest and the 2022 Simola Hillclimb. We also get our hands on quite a few cars to drive. In this piece, 2022’s Most Memorable Cars, we take a look back at some of the cars that stick in our minds long after we have left the driver’s seat.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster… manual

The year kicked off with a bang for us. Just a few days into January we were offered a really special car to drive: a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster, in manual guise no less. The car is quite a rare example in RHD layout, reportedly one of less than half a dozen that left that factory in this form.

The car belongs to a friend and fan of Double Apex who was kind enough to let us have a go in it. As luck would have it, we were offered a manual Coupe to drive just a few weeks later. You can read about our drive in the Roadster as well as catch a short video by clicking here or the pic below.

Mercedes-AMG A45S

The Mercedes-AMG A45S was not a new model for 2022. However, we did get our hands on one for a slightly longer period than our original drive at the national media launch. Spending time with the apex hatch on our favourite roads helped us appreciate the many fine qualities of the A45S. It also led us down a path considering an alternate reality where Mercedes-Benz was a top contender in the WRC with Walter Rohrl and Ari Vatanen…

Toyota GR Yaris

Like the AMG above, the Yaris was also not a newcomer in 2022. But spending time behind the wheel as we steered it over five Cape mountain passes really underlined what a great car it really is, shot through with a level of engineering excellence rarely experienced at this end of the market. Audi E-Tron 55

The electric wave has well and truly started in South Africa. The top OEMs from Europe such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Porsche all offer some form of pure EV on the local sales listings. We experienced some of the BMW i range earlier this year. More recently we got a brief taste of some of the Mercedes-EQ models. The Audi E-Tron 55 is the first all-electric test car that we got our hands on for an extended period. This allowed us to use the car as any owner would. We shot a video of our time with the car which you can view here.

Toyota GR86

It’s an interesting indicator that two of the more exciting cars we got to drive in 2022 come from the same stable. That it happens to be Toyota may be even more of a surprise to some. The Japanese brand set itself a goal to produce exciting cars to drive and it is delivering on that intent.

Cars such as the GR Supra, GR Yaris, GR-S Hilux and now GR86 are road-going manifestations of motorsport excellence. Toyota dominated the WRC, WEC and rally raid series of the world. The GR86 is a junior level sportscar that will go down as one of the classics. Read our launch report here or by clicking the image below.
