The upcoming Toyota GR Super Sport debuts in the run-up to the start of the 88th 24 Hours of Le Mans.  This new hybrid hypercar will be Toyota’s endurance racing charge as the rules of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) have been changed to attract more manufacturers to the category.

The Toyota GR Super Sport is part of the next generation of hypercars that will compete from the start of the new FIA WEC season. These new racers would have been seen at Kyalami, but sadly the series’ first visit to Africa has been postponed as the race was dropped from the 2021 calendar (as you can read about here).

Technical details revealed by the organisers thus far include a minimum vehicle mass of 1 100 kg coupled with a power output of 750 bhp (560 kW). These figures should allow the LMP1 replacement category cars to achieve a lap time of 3 min 30 seconds in race trim around the La Sarthe circuit (click here to learn more about the new rules and the cars eligible).

The company’s press material says the Toyota GR Super Sport is based on the twice Le Mans-winning TS050 Hybrid racecar. The car made its debut in GR camouflage and completed a demonstration lap before returning the Le Mans trophy for this year’s race. The car was driven by Alex Wurz, a former Toyota Gazoo Racing driver.

In his own words

Alex Wurz: “It was an honour to drive this development version of the GR Super Sport for the first time in public, and especially at a circuit like Le Mans which is so closely connected to this car. The GR Super Sport was born at Le Mans so this felt like a homecoming. This was my first time to drive the car, so a demonstration lap doesn’t allow me to push the limits but I could already feel that the GR Super Sport has the potential for incredible performance. I could feel the similarities between the GR Super Sport and the TS050 Hybrid in terms of performance, particularly the four-wheel drive and the hybrid system. But the engineers tell me this was only a small taste of the GR Super Sport’s true performance so I am super excited to drive it again one day in the near future.”
