We Outline the Five Cheapest Hybrid Cars on Sale in SA Right Now

With fuel prices punishing commuters, hybrids seem like a sensible choice, and prices seem to be dropping all the time.

New

Fuel prices still punish commuters who don’t feather the gas pedal, so hybrids remain a sensible middle ground. They don’t require you to plan life around a charger the same way that EVs do in SA. They let you buy back some running-cost sanity without gambling on public infrastructure that still behaves like an afterthought.

The cheap-hybrid was a fantasy in South Africa just a few years ago. There were, for the longest time, not many options, most of which carried a price premium. It is not until the Chinese automakers started to see that EVs are not yet a viable alternative, that we’ve been privy to a large number of hybrids of various sizes, shapes and descriptions. But since the headline is what got you here, we will concentrate on the most wallet-friendly.

The GWM Ora 5 HEV Super Luxury

The Ora 5 is the newest addition to the local market and GWM came out swinging. The local subsidiary has offered the Ora 5 HEV Super Luxury as the cheapest hybrid car on sale in SA today. The hybrid variant in the range uses a 1,5-litre turbo engine and a electric drive for a total of 164 kW/476 N.m, which is pretty handy. GWM says this combination sips fuel at a rate of 5,1 L/100 km. GWM offers the same model with a traditional petrol and a full battery powertrain, which makes it quite unique. The Ora 5 straddles the line between a traditional hatchback and SUV. You can read our launch report at this link.

  • Price: R424 900
  • Powertrain: 1,5-litre turbopetrol hybrid
  • Electric-only range: n/a
  • Combined fuel use: 5,1 L/100 km
  • Total range: 1 200 km

The Chery Tiggo Cross CSH Comfort

The Tiggo4 has been an unmitigated sales success for the Chery brand. The addition of a hybrid variant in Cross guise must help its continued sales success. The compact  uses Chery’s Super Hybrid (hence CSH) which uses a 1,5-litre petrol engine combined with a dedicated hybrid transmission and a 1,83 kWh battery for a total of 150 kW/310 N.m. This is not a plug-in, so there is no meaningful electric-only driving range. You get short EV assistance, not a petrol-free commute. It is the useful kind of hybrid, saving fuel in heavy traffic when you’d usually be idling away.

  • Price: R439 900
  • Powertrain: 1,5-litre turbopetrol hybrid
  • Electric-only range: n/a
  • Combined fuel use: 5,4 L/100 km
  • Range: 1 000 km

The BYD Atto 2 DM-i

BYD has an ever-expanding range in the local market. Earlier this year the company added a small SUV called Atto 2 to its local listing. BYD’s Atto 2 DM-i has a serious trump card in this pack; it is a proper plug-in hybrid. It uses a 1,5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and 7,8 kWh battery. This all adds up to 122 kW of power and 300 N.m of torque. Fuel consumption is listed at 5,1 L/100 km. That figure is on par with the others here, but the BYD counters with an EV-only range of 40 km. So, provided you daily commute is less than that figure, you could enjoy petrol-free motoring. For buyers with a charger at home, that is a serious proposition.

  • Price: R449 900
  • Powertrain: 1,5-litre petrol PHEV, 7,8 kWh battery
  • Electric-only range: 40 km
  • Combined fuel use: 5,1 L/100 km in published overseas figures
  • Range: 930 km

The MG3 Hybrid+

The MG3 Hybrid+ is an outlier in that it is a hatchback rather a crossover, which immediately more appeal for buyers who want efficiency without dragging around extra body mass and pseudo-adventure styling. MG launched the third-generation MG3 in South Africa in 2025. The Hybrid+ setup pairs a 1,5-litre petrol naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor and a small battery pack. Like most others on this list the battery doesn’t allow for battery-only driving. Peak power is 155 kW with a healthy 425 N.m of torque

  • Price: R469 900
  • Powertrain: 1,5-litre petrol hybrid
  • Electric-only range: n/a
  • Combined fuel use: 4,3 L/100 km
  • Range: 840 km

The Omoda C5 SHS HEV

Omoda SHS HEV is the flagship version of the popular C5 range. It follows the same basic hybrid layout as its Chery cousin (above). The specifics remain the same as well: a 1,5-litre turbocharged hybrid with a small battery. Same as almost all others here, there is no quoted electric-only range. However the two Chery Group products differ slightly in terms of peak outputs. The C5 delivering 165 kW/295 N.m.  The battery supports the system rather than substituting the petrol engine. Omoda is chasing buyers who want to stand out a bit more in the crowd.

  • Price: R469 900
  • Powertrain: 1,5-litre turbopetrol hybrid
  • Electric-only range: n/a
  • Combined fuel use: 4,9 L/100 km
  • Range: +1 000 km

The cheapest hybrid conversation in South Africa is no longer about whether the technology works. It works. The argument now is supply, pricing, and whether the badge on the nose can convince you to part with your hard-earned cash.
