Our sources at Volvo tell us that we can expect to see the new Volvo S60 in South Africa around the middle of 2019.

Firsts for Volvo

Volvo’s new S60 mid-size saloon is the very first model to be produced at the company’s new manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina.

The new Volvo S60 is also the very first Volvo range not to offer a diesel option. Volvo has been quite vocal about its move towards electrification and this is the first major step in that direction.

While it shares the same basic design cues as its siblings, such as the, now, signature headlamp and taillamp motifs, the S60 is a stylistic step forward from its predecessor As with most other models in the family the S60 will be available in R-Design (pictured above), Inscription and Momentum trim levels.

Underpinnings

Volvo’s move towards shared platforms, as is the industry norm, means that the new Volvo S60 is based on the firm’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, similar that of the V60 estate, as well as the 90 series cars and XC60.

“The active chassis and drive modes deliver excellent control and an engaged performance that makes this a driver’s car,” said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Volvo Cars. “It also brings the acclaimed technology from our 90 series and other 60 series cars into this segment, making it one of the best sports saloons on the market.”

Power options

Two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines will be available in the new S60, the T6 AWD plug-in hybrid, and the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid. Volvo’s T5 and T6 petrol engines will be available at launch in selected markets.

Electrified versions of the new S60 also offer a performance handling upgrade called Polestar Engineered. You can find out more about this model by clicking here.

Safety systems up the wazoo

The Swedish brand has built a reputation for producing safe cars. The new S60 has just about every active and passive safety system produced by the firm including City Safety with Autobrake, Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering-assistance systems, while optional systems include Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake and optional Pilot Assist.

“The new S60 is one of the most exciting Volvo cars we’ve ever made,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive of Volvo Cars. “It is a true driver’s car that gives us a strong position in the US and China saloon markets, creating more growth opportunities for Volvo Cars.”
