Here is our customary Monday Motorsport Round-Up. Two world championship events take took place this past Sunday: FIA World Rallycross and Formula One. Both events were the season finale for the respective series.

FIA World Rallycross

The FIA World Rallycross series made its one and only visit to the African continent for its season-closer. Round 12 of the calendar took place at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town, South Africa.

Johan Kristofferson (VW Polo) claimed yet another victory, a record-breaking 11th, in the 2018 season. The defending champ, who already claimed the 2018 crown earlier this year drove another flawless race weekend. At this event he shared the podium with Mattias Ekstrom (Audi) and Sebastien Loeb (Peugeot). After five seasons, Ekstrom announced that he would be leaving the series and not competing full-time in 2019. Peugeot will also not return from the start of the new year.

Formula One

Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi played host the final Formula One race of 2018. Already crowned 2018 champ, Lewis Hamilton underlined his dominance by claiming an 11th win of the season, to add to his 11th pole position start of 2018. This win brings Hamilton’s career tally to 73. He is now within reach of getting to Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 victories. The Brit was followed home by title rival Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing).

Nico Hulkenberg barrel-rolled into the barriers at the start as he tangled with Romain Grosjean, thankfully there were no injuries. The race was emotional for a few drivers, and fans, as Fernando Alonso exited the sport. Kimi Raikkonen had his last race with Ferrari and Daniel Ricciardo has his last outing with Red Bull Racing.
