McLaren has a habit of launching new models with regularity. This week it’s the turn of the latest track-focussed version, called the McLaren 765LT. LT refers to Longtail a suffix that was first used on the McLaren F1 GTR race car in the 1990s. Since 2015 LT has been used to denote lightweight, track-focussed road-legal LT variants of existing model lines. Just 765 individually numbered cars available globally for order.

More power

The McLaren 765LT is based on the already fast 720S. In this guise, it produces 765PS of power, or (in new money) 563 kW along with 800 N.m of torque from the 4,0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 motor. Drive is still fed to the rear axle via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. McLaren says the 765LT transmission is optimised for acceleration, with in-gear acceleration up to 15 per cent quicker than 720S. Acceleration numbers are staggering with 0-100 km/h taking just 2,8 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7,2 seconds. McLaren says it’ll blitz the quarter-mile in under ten seconds and has a top speed of 330 km/h.

Lighter

McLaren has made extensive use of car carbon fibre to drop the mass of the 765LT by 80 kg over the 720S. New, bespoke panels also create additional downforce. The extended front splitter and elongated active rear wing work in conjunction with the carbon-fibre floor, unique door blades and the extended rear diffuser to deliver aerodynamic downforce 25 per cent greater than the 720S  The front ride height is reduced by 5mm (rear is unchanged) and front track is 6mm wider. These improve both grip and balance.

The hydraulically actuated rear wing has three positions Driver Downforce (active wing partially deployed, dependent on speed) is engaged when the Aero button is pushed in the cabin, increasing downforce levels during high-speed cornering; DRS automatically delivers drag reduction functionality when accelerating in a straight line, up to the maximum vehicle speed and High Speed Braking fully deploys the active wing in less than half-a-second, increasing rear downforce by more than 60 per cent to improve high-speed braking stability and reduce braking distances

Rolling stock

A new 10-spoke forged alloy wheel has been created especially for the McLaren 765LT. These are fastened by with titanium wheel bolts. Bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres are standard specification. The wheels cover massive carbon-ceramic discs. On the front wheels they are 390 mm and clamped by six-piston calipers, at the rear are 380 mm items fitted with four-piston calipers.
