Tuned Hondas are part and parcel of the motoring landscape. In fact, we’ll bet there are more modified Hondas in SA than there are standard examples. However, this Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer may be the most bonkers one we’ve ever seen.

In-house Race Machine

The Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer is a product of the company’s in-house, US racing division called Honda Performance Development (HPD). The radical ‘SUV’ was first teased about ten days ago. HPD released a few teaser images showing the radically altered family wagon. They followed up with a short video that gave us an indication of the sounds the CR-V produces. Based on the initial video, many speculated that the Honda CR-V Hybrid Racer would have a powertrain borrowed from its endurance racer called the ARX-06 prototype.

CR-V in Name

While it maybe be called the CR-V Hybrid Racer there is only a small section used from the production version. The concept feature enormous aero elements, such as a massive rear wing. It also has huge fender flares, which, like many other body panels, is made from carbon-fibre. The interior features a racecar-style steering wheel and a pair of race bucket seats.

Powerhouse

The rear section of the cabin now houses a hybrid drivetrain, so the kids will definitely have to stay at home. The CR-V Hybrid Racer is powered by a 2,2-litre twin-turbocharged, electrified Honda V6 IndyCar power unit and transmission. The engine runs on 100 per cent renewable race fuel. It also features supercapacitors and Empel MGU hybrid motor technology. Total system power is rated as a fraction under 600 kW. It is, for all intents and purposes, an IndyCar with two seats.
