It seems that just about every few weeks a new hypercar emerges. Consequently, it seems high-end Porsches, Ferraris, McLarens and Bugattis just don’t cut it anymore. Recently, a number of small scale manufacturers from all corners of the globe are getting in on the act. Over the past few years, we’ve seen automakers emerge from countries that are not really known for high-performance automotive products. Next, let’s take a look at the Lotus Evija.

Light, but quick

Lotus has long been a producer of lightweight sports cars with small engines. They place an emphasis on driving dynamics. Subsequently, it was a well-known ethos of company founder Colin Chapman.

Now, the Evija (pr: ee-Vy-ja) is the company’s first all-electric model. Interestingly, the name Evija, fittingly, means “the first in existence”.

The new car is the most powerful ever produced by Lotus. It boasts a total of 1 470 kW on offer from four electric motors.

Built dynamic

To improve the dynamic repertoire, Lotus is targeting a total mass of under 1 700 kg. It is relatively light by electric car standards. (Although, we’re not sure how Mr Chapman would feel about that figure.) Nevertheless, Evija features active aerodynamics, racecar-derived suspension, and torque vectoring. It’s even fitted with lightweight magnesium alloy wheels.

Finally, the battery management system is sourced from industry specialists Williams Advanced Engineering. This company was founded by the same folks who compete in Formula One.

Lotus claims a 0-300 km/h sprint time of under nine seconds. And finally, the firm’s Hethel headquarters in the UK will build only 130 examples of the Evija.
