The range leader of BMW’s X Series family made its debut today. Called the BMW X7 the all-new model is a step up from the recently launched X7.

Large and in charge

The BMW X7 is the largest member of the X family. It measures 5 151 mm in length, 2 000 mm wide and is 1 805 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3 105 mm. With the X7’s launch, each member of the sedan family now has a corresponding X Series namesake.

To hide its proportions the X7 has several cues that have been up-scaled such as those massive front kidney grille intakes and alloys which measure between 20 and 22 inches in diameter.

In keeping with its large size, the X7 offers seating for seven. The rear-most seats aren’t just for kids either as they full-size seats complete with armrests, cupholders and USB ports.

The BMW X7 comes as standard with leather trim, four-zone automatic climate control, a three-section panoramic glass roof, and ambient lighting including the Welcome Light Carpet and Dynamic Interior Light. Of course, you can spend days trawling through the BMW options list adding extras to your heart’s/wallet’s content.

Power options

Powering the BMW X7 range are four different engine options. The choice of powerplants closely mirrors that of the X5 line-up.

An XDrive 50i derivative is powered by a 340 kW petrol V8. The second petrol unit is an inline six-cylinder with an output of 250 kW, which wears the xDrive40i badge. A pair of inline sixes with outputs of 195 kW in the BMW X7 xDrive30d and 294 kW in the BMW X7 M50d are the turbodiesel options.

All engines are mated with eight-speed automatic transmissions. Power is fed to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive rear bias all-wheel-drive set-up. All BMW X7 models feature adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers and air springs on both axles.
