BMW has contested the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans on numerous occasions. It returns to this hallowed ground on June 16 for the 2018 edition of the world’s most prestigious endurance circuit race.

A class contender

Instead of a front-running LMP car, BMW will compete in the GTE class with its M8 GTE. This will mark the first time since 2011 that the German marque will contest the French event. In 1999 BMW claimed overall victory with the V12 LMR open-top prototype sportscar.

The M8 GTE has already demonstrated its potential at the World Endurance Championship season opener in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, and the US-American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

In the GTE class the M8 will compete against Aston Martin Vantages, Ferrari 488s, Ford GTs and Porsche 911s.

A world launch

24 hours before the flag falls to signal the race start, BMW will launch the all-new BMW M850i xDrive Coupe.

According to BMW the M850i has: “offers outstanding dynamic handling characteristics thanks to a new V8 engine, intelligent four-wheel drive, controlled rear axle differential lock, Integral Active Steering, adaptive M suspension technology Professional featuring Active Roll Stabilization and 20-inch light alloy wheels boasting high-performance tyres.”
