Turbo power and all-wheel-drive

The VW Golf R has steadily been building a solid reputation as an everyday performer. A combination of the company’s inline turbo four-pot and all-wheel-drive has made it ideal for countries with less than ideal weather conditions. A turbocharged 2,0-litre engine delivers 235 kW of power and 430 N.m of torque. This outputs make it the most powerful series production Golf of all time. Drive, as is usual for R derivatives, is sent to all four wheels. The standard transmission is a dual-clutch seven-speed item called DSG.

BMW and Mercedes may indeed have taken a leaf out of VW’s book. Each produced a model that seems to be gunning for the Golf R. In the case of the range-topping 1 Series, power comes from turbocharged 2,0-litre inline engine that produces 225 kW and 450 N.m of torque that is delivered to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The entry point to AMG ownership is the Mercedes-AMG A35. A new turbocharged, inline four-cylinder motor, dubbed M260 for the newest A-class develops 225 kW of power with peak torque of 400 N.m from 3 000-4 000 r/min. Drive is transferred to all four wheels via an AMG Speedshift DCT 7G dual-clutch transmission.

On paper these are three very closely matched cars that should make for a very close-fought straight line battle… but as we know from other drag races what is close in theory does not always translate into reality.
