Audi's new RS5 rewrites the plug-in hybrid rulebook.

Audi's first high-performance plug-in hybrid RS5 combines a twin-turbo V6 and electric motor for 825 N.m, hitting 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. It's redefining electrified quattro.

A decade ago, 470 kW was the stuff of supercars. Now Audi delivers that from the factory in sedan and stationwagon forms. The new RS5 arrives as the brand’s first proper high-performance plug-in hybrid. A twin-turbo 2,9-litre V6 works in conjunction with an electric motor for a combined 825 N.m and a 3,6-second sprint to 100 km/h.

Visual identity

The exterior treatment let’s onlookers know that the RS5 means business. A prominent Singleframe grille and deep air intakes dominate the nose. Centrally mounted matte oval exhaust outlets and a vertical red diffuser reflector mark the rear. Standard equipment includes 20-inch five-Y-spoke alloys in Platinum Grey, black mirror caps, and darkened Matrix LED headlights with RS-specific signatures.

An Audi Sport package adds more muscular bumpers and unlocks and an additional 35 km/h on top of  the standard 250 km/h limiter, along with exclusive Bedford Green paint. Wheel options expand to 21 inches. For those seeking individual appearance, the Matte Carbon Camouflage package uses fragmented carbon-fibre construction so no two components share identical patterning.

Inside, RS sport seats plus combine perforated leather with honeycomb quilting, Nappa inserts, and Dinamica microfibre. Heating, ventilation, and massage are standard, as are three-zone climate control and the ambient lighting package pro. Optional interior themes in red or green extend the personalisation, while Audi exclusive opens bespoke upholstery and trim possibilities including Carbon Twill, aluminium Rhombus, and matching Matte Carbon Camouflage inlays.

The virtual cockpit plus displays RS-specific instrumentation covering revs, shift lights, G-force, tyre temperatures and pressures, lap timing, and drivetrain telemetry. A factory driving experience function records pedal inputs, oversteer and understeer events, and acceleration vectors on major circuits. It automatically generates track profiles for unknown or private layouts with user-definable sectors. An optional integrated dashcam captures video through the rearview mirror.

Standard convenience equipment spans a head-up display, passenger-side MMI screen, Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium audio, digital key, smartphone integration, and a powered tailgate. The Technology package pro adds digital OLED rear lights, 3D and 360-degree camera coverage, remote parking assistance, and adaptive cruise assist plus. A panoramic glass roof with nine independently dimmable segments costs nothing extra.

Hybrid hardware as performance tool

A 22 kWh battery pack delivers 78 to 84 km of electric range, enough to contend with most daily commutes without waking the V6. Charging happens at 11 kW on AC, allowing overnight replenishment on a domestic wallbox or top-ups during office hours where workplace infrastructure exists.

The system deploys its electrons for speed rather than merely efficiency. The motor fills torque holes below the turbochargers’ boost threshold, sharpening throttle response. This benefits tight-pass overtaking on the N1 or threading through erratic urban traffic. A boost function summons maximum acceleration for ten-second bursts, with the transmission pre-selecting the optimal ratio and a countdown timer displayed to the driver. Even in EV mode, triggering boost primes the V6 and opens the exhaust valves instantly.

Regeneration operates through steering wheel paddles in three stages during electric running, or automatically. Hybrid mode allows battery state-of-charge management through a digital slider, letting a driver preserve electric range for urban arrival or deplete it entirely on a fast stretch.

A quattro system that thinks in milliseconds

The RS5 introduces a completely revised quattro drivetrain built around Dynamic Torque Control. An electromechanical torque vectoring system for the rear axle is the first of its kind in a production car.

Previous quattro setups split torque fore and aft or used brake intervention to shuffle power side to side. This hardware works at the axle itself, continuously varying drive between the rear wheels based on grip, steering angle, throttle position, and yaw rate.

An RS torque rear mode exists for closed circuits, though the standard calibration already permits enough rotation to keep keen drivers entertained. The system is paired with twin-valve dampers and drive select modes spanning balanced, dynamic, and RS sport. The track has been widened by four centimetres at each corner relative to the base A5, giving the RS5 the footprint to deploy its outputs without constant electronic interference.
