A few weeks ago we brought you this story of VW attempting to set a very special record in China. This week the company announced that the VW ID.R conquers Tianmen. ID is the name VW has chosen for its electrically-powered sub-brand of vehicles. The very first production model was debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week. Multiple record holder
VW’s ID.R is a bespoke creation that was built to showcase the company’s electric vehicle capability. The car demonstrated its prowess on 24 June 2018 at the legendary Pikes Peak (USA) Hillclimb. Regular pilot Romain Dumas won the famous ‘Race to the Clouds’ driving the 500 kW electric four-wheel-drive racer. In the process, he smashed the all-time record by a massive 16 seconds. The electric record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife was beaten comprehensively, and a few days later Dumas claimed all-time record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The most recent headline added to the car’s impressive CV is: VW ID.R conquers Tianmen. Romain Dumas set the first official record on the Tianmen Mountain Big Gate Road in China last week. In doing so VW has once again demonstrated its expertise in the field of electro-mobility. On 2 September 2019 Dumas set a time of 7 min 38,585 minutes with the ID.R over the 99-turn 10,9 kilometres stretch of tar. You can see the full run in the video below.
