China isn’t known as a hotbed of sportscar manufacture. However, in the last few days, we have featured the GAC Aion Hyper SSR, which is a futuristic-looking EV sportscar (read more here). This week another new sportscar has broken cover from the Land of the Dragon (no, we aren’t referring to Westeros), and it’s called the SSC SC-01.

National Pride

The SSC SC-01 is the handiwork of the Small Sports Car (SSC) company. They claim that the SC-01 will act as China’s “national sports car” and will deliver “pure driving pleasure.” Those are big words for a country with a massive auto industry. At any rate, the retro-looking SC-01 is an interesting prospect and that has some interesting stats.

Old But New

The four metre-long two-seater is just over 1,1 metres tall and over 1,8 metres wide, giving it a squat and planted appearance. The headlamps are fared in and the taillamps are reminiscent of those seen on a Lancia Stratos. They are quite similar, in fact, to those on the modern-day interpretation of the MAT Stratos.

E-Power

The SSC SC-01 is powered by a modern powertrain. It has two electric motors, one per axle, for a total of 320 kW. SSC claims the car weighs a light (for an EV) 1 300 kg. That power and low mass allow it to sprint from rest to 100 km/h in 3,9 seconds.

SSC says that the battery pack will be sited behind the cabin, where the engine would be placed in a traditional mid-engine ICE car. This will allow occupants to sit lower to the ground and to make the car feel more like a traditional sportscar. The battery pack is said to provide 500 km on a full charge, which is pretty handy.
