It seems that Mercedes-Benz has been on a new product offensive for the better part of two years. The latest revision to the Tri-Star portfolio is the launch of the all-new Mercedes-Benz B-Class, which is now available for sale locally (see bottom of post for pricing).

New looks

The new model has been revised from top to bottom, with the most evident change being its appearance. The newcomer has a sleeker, more rounded and appealing appearance than the blocky nature of its predecessor. In the updated cabin, users can interact with Mercedes’ latest HMI, referred to as MBUX multimedia system which includes touchscreen control as standard.

Although the new compact car is based on the same underpinnings as the latest A-Class, the B-Class is aimed more at young families, rather than single professionals. The driver sits 90 mm higher than in an A-Class, for a commanding view of the road. The rear seat backrest folds in a variable a 40:20:40 split, and with the rear seat folded flat there is 1 540 litres of packing space available.

As expected, there is a full suite of active and passive safety features that include a rigid passenger safety cell, active brake assist, and airbags for driver and front passenger, knee-bag for the driver, window bags and sidebags (combined thorax/pelvis bag).

Two engines debut

Mercedes-Benz SA has chosen this model to debut two new powerplants into the local market. The petrol option will be badged B200. The engine in this car, codenamed M282, is a four-cylinder turbopetrol that displace 1,33-litres and produces 120 kW/250 N.m. It is mated with a 7G-DCT transmission.

A diesel derivative, called B200d, will be powered by a 2,0 turbodiesel that produces 110 kW/320 N.m. It is mated with a new-to-SA eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Both B200 models are front-wheel drive. In time Mercedes-Benz SA will launch more engines and even all-wheel-drive options for local B-Class buyers to choose from. Both derivatives ride on all-independent suspension, with the rear arrangement made extensively from aluminium.
