You get quirky cars, then you get cars from Morgan, and the all-new Morgan Super 3 is about as quirky as any car you are likely to see. The Super 3 is the latest three-wheel creation in the company’s 113-year history of building cars with this novel layout.

“At the very heart of Super 3’s personality is its driving character. Primarily, a three-wheeled Morgan is a vehicle that entices you to get behind the wheel, offering a unique combination of mechanical feel, connection to the environment and visual differentiation from anything else on the road. Few vehicles will engage their occupants like Super 3, which encourages owners to feel present in the craft of motoring and entices them to embark on incredible adventures.”

Keeping it simple

The Morgan Super 3 is quite a simple machine, in keeping with the credo outlined above. However, this latest version is all-new from the ground up even though it may seem as if it drove straight out of an Indiana Jones movie.

In keeping with tradition, the Super 3 has a three-wheel layout with a single drive wheel behind the passenger compartment. In this case ‘compartment’ is an apt description as it is a water- and dust-tight area. The cabin is high-tech, even if it seems like an old-timey prospect from the outside. There is a digital cluster with chunky switchgear, no doubt meant for use with gloves on.

New powertrain

Previous generations of three-wheel Morgans have utilised V-twin motors mounted between the front wheels. However, the Morgan Super 3 has a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that is sourced from Ford. The engine is placed behind the front axle line in a midship position. Powerful, efficient and characterful, it provides a combination of attributes which make it perfectly suited to its application in the Morgan Super 3 are the words used to describe the motor.

Peak power from the naturally aspirated triple is 87 kW with 150 N.m of torque. Incidentally, drive is sent to the rear wheel through a five-speed transmission usually found in a Mazda MX-5. Tipping the scales at a featherweight 635 kg the Morgan Super 3 can sprint from rest to 100 km/h in approximately seven seconds and has a top speed of just under 210 km/h.

Steve Morris, chairman and CEO, Morgan Motor Company: “Following on from the incredible success of the outgoing Morgan 3 Wheeler has been no easy task. When we first decided to reintroduce it back in 2011, the company couldn’t have imagined just how popular and successful the V-twin model would be. The Morgan 3 Wheeler represents something different, something unique and something to be celebrated. As we launch Super 3, I am confident that our latest three-wheeled offering is as relevant as ever.”
