Range Rover goes full electric and maintains complete off-road capability

The first electric Range Rover rolls out of Solihull with numbers that challenge every skeptic who said electrons could not match the old V8s for proper shove. 850 N.m from twin permanent magnet motors makes this the torquiest Range Rover ever built. That figure arrives at all four wheels through a system that thinks in milliseconds rather than mechanical lag, and it does so without the exhaust note that once defined the breed.

Solihull Built

The Solihull plant has assembled Range Rovers since 1970. This machine carries that lineage in its aluminium bones while replacing everything that once burned petrol. Two 260 kW permanent magnet motors combine for 404 kW total output, fed by a 118,5 kWh usable lithium-ion double-stack battery. 800-volt architecture enables split-charging capability. At a 350 kW DC rapid charger the pack runs from 10 to 80 per cent in roughly 22 minutes. Ten minutes at peak rate stuffs in 220 km of range.

WLTP testing certifies 598 km on a full charge, though the more honest real-world figure JLR quotes sits at, a still handy, 535 km. For context, that is Johannesburg to Durban with one brief stop, or a week’s worth of Sandton commuting without plugging in at all. The 0-100 km/h sprint lands in 4,3 seconds, but the more telling number is 80-120 km/h in 2,7 seconds. That is overtaking a crawling truck on the N3 without breathing hard. The instant torque of electric drive makes so much sense in a car this large.

Electric Hardware on the Rough Stuff

Range Rover built its reputation on Eastnor Castle mud and ruts, so the off-road hardware had to survive scrutiny from owners who actually use the off-road capability. Intelligent Driveline Dynamics can shuffle rear axle torque from 100 per cent down to zero and back again, preventing traction loss before the driver notices slip. Integrated Traction Management controls individual motor speeds within 50 milliseconds and reacts to wheel slip 100 times faster than any internal combustion equivalent. The system adjusts immediately, without waiting for driveshafts to wind up or couplings to engage.

Single Pedal mode brings a different kind of precision to low-speed work. The system enables smooth pullaway on slopes up to 33 degrees, and rolling climbs up to 45 degrees, without the left-foot braking choreography that ICE off-roaders demand. Silicon carbide semiconductors in the motor controllers switch at microsecond speeds. And if you are wondering, the large EV SUV can wade through up to 900 mm of water.

Real-world Testing

JLR ran this vehicle through 1,5 million kilometres and 250 000 hours of virtual and physical testing. The program included -40°C in Arjeplog, Sweden, where batteries typically perform badly and regen systems falter. It included Dubai desert heat, where thermal management systems face their sternest examination. The Eastnor Castle facility in Herefordshire provided the controlled off-road abuse.

ThermAssist heat management addresses the cold-weather problem directly. The system can add up to 40 km of effective range in low temperatures while cutting heating energy consumption by 40 per cent. Rather than bleeding battery capacity to warm occupants, it scavenges and redirects waste heat.

The battery itself lives inside a high-strength aluminium enclosure and survived vibration and shock testing from -40°C to +90°C in JLR’s dedicated battery laboratory. Safety margins exceed industry standards, according to the engineering claims. The propulsion system carries an eight-year or 160 000-kilometre warranty.

Connected Cabin

The electric powertrain changes the luxury aspect in many ways. Eliminating the combustion engine removes noise, vibration, intake harmonics, and the subtle intrusions of gear changes. The 850 N.m arrives without downshift delay or building of boost pressure. The result is a cabin environment closer to the isolation that Range Rover has always pursued. The new Range Rover App offers remote cabin purification, heated steering wheel activation, lock status checks, and live location viewing. Scheduled charging lets owners exploit off-peak electricity tariffs.
