The new BMW X4 international launch took place last week, and while we didn’t crack an invite to the ride and drive event, we do have some info to share.

New looks

As you can see from the images above, the new BMW X4 takes the distinctive looks of its predecessor and sharpens them somewhat. This newer version is less awkward in appearance and looks like a modern interpretation of that original X6.

Bold BMW “kidneys”, as well as sculpted headlamps, are countered by slip taillamps. A broad stance gives one the impression that it handles really well, which usually the case with BMW SUVs. As expected it is a little larger than the outgoing X4, to the benefit of interior and boot space.

Inside, too, the looks are new as well as more high-tech. The new BMW X4 features the latest generation of BMW’s interior equipment, from touchscreen infotainment to virtual instrument cluster to the iDrive controller.

New under the skin

Under the skin the new BMW X4 boasts a raft of upgrades. Revised suspension adds adaptive damping as well as torque vectoring and rear-drive bias ensure a sporty drive sensation. BMW xDrive all-wheel drive is standard in all models.

To further improve its dynamic prowess, BMW says that the new car’s centre of gravity is lowered even further as compared to its predecessor as well as a total mass reduction of some 50 kg.

Engine line-up

At the time of South African launch, in September this year, two derivatives will be available locally. Both are 2,0-litre turbocharged units. The X4 xDrive20i is petrol-fed and it produces 135 kW, whereas the 20d is diesel powered and it produces 140 kW.

Available early next year are two more variants. Dubbed BMW X4 M40i and X4 M40d. While info is not yet available for the former, the latter engine develops 240 kW and 680 N.m of torque. We can expect all local X4 derivatives to feature eight-speed automatic transmissions.

In typical BMW fashion, the range will be spearheaded by an X4 M in due course.
