A new range-leader
The Audi Q8 is the range-topper of the Audi Q family. As the newest addition to the Audi line-up the Q8 introduces several new technologies, and not least of all, ushers in the new look of the Q family. An octagonal shaped front grille, seen on the Q8 for the first time, will be rolled out to all Q models in the future. LED head and taillamps add to the modern look of the Audi Q8 now in SA.
The Q8 is quite a large vehicle at nearly five metres long and two metres wide. A sloping roofline tries to hide some of its overall size. Massive alloys, 20-inch as standard, up to 22s as an option are another visual trick to hide its size. These large dimensions create seating for five adults inside.
Just one derivative will be available at the time of launch, called the Audi Q8 55 TFSI. It features a 3,0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged motor that produces 250 kW. Maximum torque is rated at 500 Nm. Audi claims that the Q8 55 can spring to 100 km/h in 5,9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h.
Power is transmitted through an automatic transmission to all four wheels, giving the Q8 a modicum of off-road capability. 254 mm of ground clearance, short overhangs and hill descent control add to the Q8’s off-road credentials.
A second model, badged 45 TDI, with a 3,0-litre turbodiesel engine will be available from mid-year 2019. The oil-burning powerplant develops 183 kW of maximum power with 600 N.m of peak torque.
The Audi Q8 now in SA offers a comprehensive standard specification list. This list includes, among others, electrically adjustable front seats with four-way lumbar support, Bang & Olufsen sound system with 3D sound, Audi connect, music interface in the rear seat area, drive select, four-zone climate control, keyless entry and starting, MMI Navigation plus with MMI touch and a panoramic glass sunroof.
On the safety side of the equation there is parking aid plus with 360-degree display, side airbags in front and curtain airbag system, a tyre pressure monitoring system and the expected systems such as anti-lock brakes, vehicle stability control, etc.
