Aston Martin has been launching models with regularity in the recent past. After we saw the debut of the all-new DBX SUV earlier this year the company unveiled another new model this week. Its sleek ‘entry-level’ coupe went in for surgery and came out as the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster.

Roofectomy

Lopping off the roof has added 60 kg to the Vantage in terms of additional bracing and the folding roof. The fabric hood features a Z-fold mechanism that can be lowered in 6,7- or raised in 6,8 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. According to Aston Martin the Vantage Roadster has the fastest full operating cycle of any automatic automotive convertible system. The Roadster’s luggage space is quoted as 200 litres, large enough for a full-sized golf bag and accessories.

Same underneath

The Aston Martin Vantage Roadster may have lost its roof in on the operating room, but little else has changed. Under that long bonnet, we still find a twin-turbocharged V8. The AMG-sourced unit is good for 375 kW along with 685 N.m of torque. Power is delivered to the rear axle via an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission. The British sportscar maker says the Vantage Roadster can accelerate from 0-96 km/h (60 mph in old speak) in just 3,7 seconds. They also say it is capable of reaching 306 km/h; that is with the roof in place.

The soft-top version has the coupe’s adaptive damping, dynamic stability control, dynamic torque vectoring and electronic rear differential. The Roadster benefits from specific calibration of the rear dampers, adaptive damping system software and ESP.

In his own words

Aston Martin president and chief executive officer, Dr Andy Palmer, said of the Vantage Roadster: “Open-top Aston Martins are always firm favourites with our customers, so it’s very exciting to introduce the Vantage Roadster. For many, driving with the roof down is the true definition of the sports car experience as it truly brings your senses to life. Vantage has always delivered the purest of thrills, but in Roadster form that adrenaline rush is set to go to the next level”.
