It may have been conceived in the 1960s, but we are about to see an all-electric Jaguar E-Type. Yes, you read that correctly. And this isn’t some backyard special either.
Factory approval
Jaguar Classic recently announced that it will offer all-electric E-types for sale. The firm’s in-house restoration arm will offer its traditional expertise along with with cutting-edge technology from the Jaguar I-Pace. The latter is a zero-emissions performance SUV that was launched earlier this year. Jaguar Classic will offer tailor-made E-types restored and converted to run solely on electric power.

If you’re lucky enough to already own an E-Type, Jaguar classic will offer you an EV conversion, which is fully reversible. Deliveries of the first electrically driven Jaguar E-types are expected to start in 2020.
Jaguar E-type Zero concept
To showcase this new model Jaguar unveiled the Jaguar E-type Zero concept at the recent Pebble Beach event. The concept version is powered by a 40 kWh battery. The battery can be recharged in six to seven hours. Jaguar Classic is targeting a range in excess of 270 km.
An electric powertrain has been designed for the E-type but it borrows heavily from the Jaguar I-Pace. The lithium-ion battery is similar in size and mass to the standard E-type’s six-cylinder engine and therefore takes its place under the engine cover. The battery pack is coupled to an electric motor which take the place of the E-type’s gearbox.
Because the replacement components are of similar mass and dimensions to the outgoing engine and transmission means that the car retains its original suspension and brakes. It supposedly drives, handles, rides and brakes like an original E-type.
Apart from its state-of-the-art powertrain, modified instrumentation and fascia showcasing the latest touchscreen infotainment, the E-type Zero concept is largely original.
In his own words
