A few days ago we brought you a story of the latest hot Golf GTI. It is called the Golf GTI TCR and it is most likely the swansong for the GTI badge in Golf 7 guise as Volkswagen will debut the Golf 8 soon enough. Now we bring you a GTI TCR review.

Headline figures

This apex GTI is powered by a 2,0-litre turbocharged inline four, like all other current performance Golfs. In this guise, the motor produces 213 kW, between 5 000 and 6 800 r/min, coupled with peak torque of 370 N.m available between 1 600 and 4 300 r/min. Power is delivered to just the front wheels via 7-speed dual clutch gearbox.

The Golf GTI TCR can sprint from a standing start to 100 km/h in just 5,6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h, though it can be lifted to 260 km/h if you’d like extra bragging rights.

The chaps are UK-based automotive online portal Car Wow are fortunate enough to attend all the latest international launch events. Better than that, they produce these excellent videos giving viewers a full rundown of what the new model is about, as well as their thoughts. In this video, they do a full GTI TCR review.

Such is the clout of the UK site that VW even let the reviewer drive their TCR racecar. He also did a few acceleration runs to gauge the relative performance of the road- and racecar in terms of straight-line performance.

In this video, Mat Watson also takes a walk down GTI memory lane as well. At the world ride and drive event of the TCR VW also laid on the full GTI family for select journos to experience first-hand. Golf fans will really enjoy this one.
