We have Toyota Supra local pricing a few days ahead of the car’s introduction to the SA market. One of the most anticipated car launches for car enthusiasts takes place later this week, that of the all-new Toyota Supra. Double Apex will be attending the ride and drive event, you will be able to read our impressions on this site soon after.

Two grades

The GR Supra model line-up consists of two models, the GR Supra Track and GR Supra. The Track model is aimed at enthusiasts wishing to use their vehicle predominantly for performance-orientated driving and prioritises vehicle dynamics over convenience specification.

From a mechanical point of view, the main difference revolves around the dampers. Track models have passive dampers whereas the ‘normal’ version has adaptive dampers that are electronically controlled.

Performance expected

We’ve covered the new Toyota Supra on our site before (most notably when the car made its international debut) so we already know some of the salient information, especially as far as petrolheads are concerned.

Powering the new Supra is a 3,0litre six-cylinder engine. This inline motor features turbocharging to develop a peak of 250 kW of power along with 500 N.m of torque. Drive is fed to the rear axle via an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Gearshifts can be controlled by paddles mounted behind the steering wheel rim. There is an active limited slip differential in place to ramp up performance and the entertainment factor. Many will already know that the engine, transmission, and most of the underpinnings were co-developed with BMW. BMW uses these parts in its new Z4.

Interestingly, the Supra has a shorter wheelbase and lower centre of gravity than Toyota’s other current sportscar, the GT86. The Supra forms the mid-level sportscar offering from the Japanese automaker. Soon there will be a Toyota GR hypercar on offer as well. The apex model has been testing in Japan (as you can see in this previous story). The Gazoo Racing hypercar will be competing in the World Endurance Championship’s new LMP1 class, competing against the likes of Aston Martin, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus and Ginetta.
