Days of Thunder 2

Rubbin is racin’, has probably been uttered at just about every racetrack around the world. It was uttered by veteran crew chief named Harry Hogge in the 1990 movie Days of Thunder. That movie starred Tom Cruise as up and coming racer, Cole Trickle trying to make his mark on the world of stock car racing. That movie is set to, finally have a follow-up, as announced by Cruise via his social media channels.

New female lead

Cruise took to social media this past weekend, hours before the close of the Nascar ‘regular’ season to announce the follow-up movie. He made the announcement from Daytona International Speedway on Saturday where he appeared alongside Anne Hathaway. The Devil Wears Prada star will feature as a team owner and engineer in the film scheduled to be released by Paramount Pictures on in June 2028.

Top Gun on track

Cruise, who had massive mainstream success with Top Gun a few years earlier, had envisioned Days of Thunder as a similar concept, but taking place on track. It was even directed by Tony Scott, who was responsible for Top Gun. The racing movie, while not a box office success at the time, has since become a cult classic. It also popularised Nascar with a much wider audience than ever before.

Under wraps

We know that Cruise will reprise his role as Trickle, and Hathaway as a team owner, but no other details of the script have yet been revealed. Nascar has certainly changed since the first movie was released 36 years ago. It’ll be interesting to see how the directorial and production team will handle the newer movie. Although, knowing Cruise’s inclination towards realism, we won’t we surprised to see him racing in rounds of the 2027 Nascar season…
