Usually when we write about a restomod it’s a low-slung sportscar, or reimagined rally rep. But this one is a bit different. The Renntech S76R is a luxo-barge with a massive engine that has been upgraded with new tech.

Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts will be familiar with the name Renntech. The US-based company has been customising and tuning Mercedes products for over 30 years. The Renntech S76R could well be one of its coolest creations. Renntech’s S76R is based on a W140 series Mercedes-Benz S-Class. More specifically, the base car is a 600SEL. That means it was the top-of-the-range version and a long wheelbase derivative of the luxury saloon.

More Power

The Renntech S76R has an extensively modified version of Mercedes’ M120 6,0-litre V12. The company increased the displacement to a massive 7,6-litre. In addition to the increase in displacement Renntech adds titanium conrods and AMG camshafts inside ported heads.

The power rating is now up to 459 kW with just over 950 N.m of torque. The power figure alone is a 50 per cent increase over standard. A five-speed auto’ from a later generation S-Class replaces the stock four-speed item. The driveline also benefits from an aftermarket limited-slip differential. The luxo-barge can sprint from 0-100 km/h in the low-5,0 second range and it has a top speed of 250 km/h.

Other Mechanical Changes

The Renntech S76R has a revised suspension that consists of shorter coil springs, and adaptive dampers. Even cooler are the 402 mm (front) and 360 mm (rear) carbon ceramic discs. These discs are clamped by six- and four-piston AMG brake calipers, respectively. The S76R is fitted with forged aluminium wheels, that measure 19 inches in diameter, to reduce unsprung mass even further.

Looking Mean

Renntech fitted the S76R with a subtle AMG body for a bit more aggro. The kit consists of a front splitter, trunk lip spoiler, and louvred side mouldings. The interior has been modernised in a few select areas. The upgrades include new seats with diamond-stitched embroidery on the leather. There is also plenty of carbon-fibre trim and the headliner is Alcantara. Two individual bucket seats have replaced the rear bench.
