A regular contributor to, and friend of, Double Apex, David Marchio was crowned MSA Photographer of the Year at a gala ceremony in Johannesburg last night. The talented lensman won the Steve Wicks award for excellence in motorsport photography.

The annual event is held under the auspices of Motorsport South Africa (MSA) the FIA-affliated governing body for all motorised sport in the country. The award is named after the late Steve Wicks, a real character of a local photographer who was an ardent motorsport fan.

Newcomer

Cape-based Marchio started shooting motorsport about two years ago. Since that first event, he has produced an impressive portfolio of work capturing the bulk of his images at Killarney International Raceway. He has differentiated himself with artistic and creative imagery that is often lauded by fellow photographers and competitors alike.

The double motorcycle stoppies, a weary racer hanging his head at the end of a long day and a speedy pic of our own Mazda MX-5 track car (all above) are examples of his work.

Directly after being announced as the winner last night, Marchio said in an interview with Double Apex: “I am honoured, gobsmacked and ecstatic. I can’t quite make sense of it all yet.”
