The rough and tumble action of Monster Jam races back into South Africa next year. The series made its first appearance locally in 2019. The events seemed to be well received with all stadiums chock-full of motorsport fans.

Rip-snorting Fun

Monster Jam is not a serious form of racing in the same vein as rallycross or Formula One. Instead, the emphasis is on entertainment, something the series does well. Each event takes place on specially constructed tracks set within a stadium. The race machines are scaled up so they are pretty easy to see.

Each truck weighs about five tons and is powered by a supercharged V8 producing in excess of 1 100 kW. Fan favourites include Grave Digger, Max-D and Megalodon. Drivers race head-to-head and perform the kinds of stunts usually only seen on MotoX bikes. Wheelies, stoppies, back-flips and high-flying antics are all part of the freestyle section of the show.

Three Events

The 2023 Monster Jam tour of SA will kick off in Cape Town on 22 April. A second show will take place in Johannesburg a week later on the 29th and the tour will conclude in Durban on 6 May.

Monster Jam does what many motorsport series fail to do: bring fans close to their heroes. Series organisers host a Pit Party ahead of every event. This allows fans to check out the race trucks up close and to meet the drivers for photos and autographs. You can already book the tickets online at this link. Prices range from R150 to R750, depending on the level of access you’re keen to enjoy.
