FINAL PODIUM

  1. Verstappen
  2. Alonso
  3. Ocon

CHEQUERED FLAG

Max Verstappen crosses the line to claim another win in Monaco. Alonso managed to retain P2, making it the highest finish for Aston Martin. Ocon secures the final spot on the podium, with Hamilton, Russell, Leclerc, Gasly, Sainz, Norris, and Piastri rounding out the points.

LAP 65/78: HAMILTON VS OCON

Hamilton has been catching Ocon for the last few laps. The Mercedes is now just 1 second behind Ocon, with 12 laps to go. The rain has eased up, making it more difficult to pass.

LAP 60/78: PENALTY FOR RUSSELL

Russell has been handed a 5-second penalty for an unsafe rejoin after going off track with Lance Stroll. However, Mercedes is looking to monitor conditions to see if wet weather tyres will become the optimal compound for the remainder of the race.

LAP 56/78: ALONSO PITS AGAIN

Alonso made the wrong choice and has to come into the pits again for inters. Since Aston Martin made his massive error, the race is on for P2 and P3. Hamilton is just 2 seconds behind Ocon in P3.

LAP 55/78: ALONSO PITS FOR DRY TYRES

Alonso has stopped for his pit stop but not for interest. Aston Martin put on a fresh set of medium tyres. Russell and Hamilton have come into the pits to change to inters. Max has slipped into the barriers but managed to keep the car going.

LAP 52/78: HERE COMES THE RAIN

Rain is starting to fall all around the track. Bottas and Stroll have stopped to change to intermediate tyres. Portions of the track are wet while other parts are completely dry. This makes it incredibly tricky to switch over to inters.

LAP 47/78: THE POSSIBILITY OF RAIN

Every team is eagerly looking at the radar for the possibility of rain. While McLaren initially assumed light rain will come into play on lap 35, the entire track is still dry. The radar hints at the possibility of rain at the end of the race since rain is falling a few km from the track. Gasly has made his pit stop, falling down to P8. Russell now takes P3 as he waits to pit.

LAP 45/78: LECLERC PITS

Charles Leclerc has made his pit stop and changed onto medium tyres. Leclerc came back on track in P9, a few seconds behind Hamilton. While Leclerc does have fresh tyres, it’s not clear if he has the pace to overtake the Mercedes. This pit stop sees Gasly take P3 since he has yet to make his stop. Russell remains behind Gasly in P4 and is also yet to pit.

LAP 37/78: SAINZ PITS

Sainz comes into the pits to cover Ocon. The Ferrari came out ahead of Hamilton in P7. While Hamilton came into the pits early, he managed to gain a second on Sainz and is within DRS range. Verstappen is struggling with his tyres and is asking the team to pit. However, the team noted that Alonso would overtake him for the lead as he is on hard tyres and can extend his stint.

LAP 32/78: HAMILTON PITS

Lewis Hamilton has come into the pits to replace his medium tyres for a fresh set of hards. This should be enough to get him to the end of the race. Hamilton came back on track in P8, behind Russell. Ocon also came into the pits to protect against the undercut by Sainz in P4. Ocon came back on track ahead of Hamilton in P7.

LAP 23/78: HAMILTON VS LECLERC

While Max has increased his lead over Alonso, the battle seems on between Hamilton and Leclerc. While Hamilton is on softer tyres, Leclerc is still within a second from the Mercedes. This gives Leclerc a great opportunity to overcut Hamilton when he eventually comes in to change his tyres. Leclerc just needs to remain patient and wait for the Mercedes to come into the pits.

LAP 16/78: ALONSO’S TYRES

Alonso is on hard tyres while Max started the race on a set of mediums. This means that Max will need to change his tyres earlier, allowing Alonso to take the lead in the race. When you look down the field, Ocon and Hamilton are both on medium tyres as well. The window for medium runners to pit will come up in the next few laps.

LAP 10/78: SAINZ MAKES CONTACT WITH OCON

Carlos Sainz has made progressed behind Ocon in P3. He went for an overtake and bailed out late, clipping Ocon in the process. Sainz broke his front end-plate and will now suffer with less downforce for the rest of the race. He was initially called into the pits to replace the front wing, but Sainz remained out on track. Hamilton is behind Sainz in P5, this leaves the door open for a possible overtake.

LAP 7/78: PEREZ IS MAKING PROGRESS

Sergio Perez may have pitted early, but he has quickly caught the rest of the pack. This essentially means that he has a pit stop in hand. When you look at his pace, he was lapping the circuit a few seconds faster than the leader, Max Verstappen. However, Monaco is incredibly difficult to overtake, with his only hope being that of a Safety Car.

LAP 2/78: EARLY PIT STOPS

Alonso had a clean start but could not get in front of Max by turn 1. Down the line, numerous cars had incidents, with contact bringing a few of them into the pits. Perez was called in early to jump those cars. Perez is now on hards that can take him to the end of the race.

FORMATION LAP

All 20 cars have left the grid and are making their way around the narrow streets of Monaco. All eyes will be on Alonso to see if he can beat Max into turn 1. Perez starts from the back, let’s wait and see how many places he can make up to keep his Championship challenge alive.
