There was a dramatic first-lap WTCR crash involving 27 cars

There was a massive accident at the start of the World Touring Car Race held in Portugal. All 27 cars on the grid were involved in the first-lap accident in race one.

Teammates Rob Huff and Mehdi Bennani tussled through the opening sequence of the race and eventually, their Volkswagen Golf GTI TCRs clashed causing a chain reaction on the street circuit.

Thed Björk’s Hyundai i30N briefly caught fire that which saw the Swede making a hasty exit through the window of his car.

The race was immediately red-flagged and took over two hours before it could be restarted. Seven cars were damaged beyond repair and could not take the restart.
