Bentley's first electric car is also its quickest. Can it still be a Bentley?

With 1 350 N.m the Torcal is a beast. But Crewe made sure its violent speed is always tempered by Bentley's renowned refinement.

The first Bentley without an exhaust pipe is also the fastest Bentley ever built. The Torcal S arrives as Crewe’s opening move in an electric future. It packs 1 350 N.m, which allows for a zero to one hundred time of 2,9 seconds. The company’s first-ever production EV is also its quickest accelerating model.

For 107 years, Bentleys have been the most incredibly complete cars – effortless performance, outstanding comfort, exquisite British handcraftsmanship using the best natural materials, and a soundtrack with soul. Our new Torcal sets extraordinary benchmarks in every area that matters

Design Language and Materials

Robin Page’s design team organised the exterior into four ‘readings’. The first is proportion: long wheelbase, short overhangs, a proud frontal aspect, and what Bentley terms an ‘endless bonnet’ stretching the visual mass. The second read is graphical identity, reinterpreting the Continental T through advanced lighting and an illuminated diamond grille, with rear graphics that reference the EXP 15 Concept Car’s ‘prestigious shield’ principle.

The third read is surface. Lines have been deliberately reduced, and the tapering cabin over the rear wheels creates what Page calls ‘resting beast’ haunches, suggesting contained rather than displayed strength. The fourth read is craft detail, with diamond patterns recurring across surfaces at varying scales, some explicit and others abstracted to the point of subliminal suggestion.

Inside, the dashboard architecture references Bentley’s winged badge for symmetry and balance. Bold sheer surfaces showcase leather, wool, veneer, and aluminium, with knurled controls and reinterpreted bullseye vents merging traditional craft with contemporary interfaces. Physical switches survive on the centre console and steering wheel, a deliberate rejection of the full-touchscreen aesthetic.

Interior Comfort and Seating

Standard seats offer sixteen-way adjustment, heating, ventilation, adjustable bolsters, and a new massage function. Options escalate quickly. Postural Adjust and Smart Seat Climate continuously reshape the seat for pressure distribution and regulate occupant temperature against a setpoint rather than simply blowing hot or cold air. The Wellness Seat Specification extends massage from the squab into the cushion, treating legs, back, and shoulders. The rear bench, accommodating three occupants, introduces Bentley’s first power fold system, finally acknowledging that owners sometimes carry objects larger than a weekend bag.

Five wheel designs launch with the car: 21-inch standard, 22-inch S standard, and three optional 22-inch designs including an aerodynamic specification. Tyre options cover 21-inch and 22-inch summer and winter compounds, plus a 22-inch all-season for those who cannot be bothered to swap sets twice yearly.

Sustainable Craftsmanship

The material story shows Crewe’s future ambitions. Bentley collaborated with Fox Brothers, the Somerset weaver operating since the eighteenth century, to develop the first automotive-grade 100% Merino wool fabric certified by the Responsible Wool Standard. Previous wool upholstery failed in automotive applications because it wore poorly and cleaned worse. This iteration solves both problems without blending in synthetic fibres.

Mulliner’s Ombre Walnut veneer layers up to one thousand individually selected, responsibly sourced walnut off-cuts with recycled craft paper, pressed and sliced to under one millimetre. The result flows through four shades from deep black to light smoke, a gradient impossible with conventional veneering. Sunburst Aluminium reinterprets historic engine-turned dashboard patterns with a precision three-way brush that catches light differently from every angle.

The full palette runs to fifteen olive tan leather shades including new Teal, Terra, and Glaze, fifteen matching Dinamica suede alternatives, five Merino wool colours, six wood veneers, two technical finishes, and six Piano lacquer options in Black, Gravity Grey, Linen, Teal, Imperial Blue, and Cricket Ball. That name alone tells you who Bentley imagines is cross-shopping this against a specification sheet.

Powertrain and Performance

Two permanent magnet synchronous motors provide the urge. The front wheels turn through an open differential; the rear uses a locking unit with multi-plate clutches on each output shaft, allowing proper torque vectoring. An 800V architecture feeds 192 lithium-ion pouch cells arranged in series, yielding 113 kWh of usable capacity and the thermal capability to sustain repeated hard acceleration. Bentley backs the pack with a ten-year, 160 000-km warranty.

There are two derivatives on offer at the time of introduction. The opening version is the Torcal which has 604 kW/1 155 N.m on tap. This is good for a 3,4 second 0-100 km/h sprint and a top speed of 250 km/h. A more powerful S version has 653 kW/1 350 N.m, which alllows for a lightning quick 2,9-second blast in the benchmark test. It has a top speed of 260 km/h. Both cars have a claimed range of 600 km.

Trick Suspension

The Torcal genuinely breaks ground under the skin. Fully active suspension with adaptive two-valve dampers makes its Bentley debut here. The system operates on a principle that would have seemed heretical a decade ago: there are no anti-roll bars. None. Instead, each damper adjusts its height instantaneously and independently, generating whatever counter-torque the body requires to stay flat. The result is infinitely variable roll resistance, tuned in real time to road surface, cornering load, and driver input.

Electronic all wheel steering is standard, the rear axle contributing up to five degrees of steering angle to shrink the turning circle to 11,1 metres. For a vehicle of this size and presence, that is hatchback manoeuvrability. Bentley claims the Torcal combines the Flying Spur’s long-distance serenity with the Continental GT Speed’s cornering poise, and the hardware suggests this is not mere marketing bumpf. Four modes span the range from relaxed cruising to off-road capability, though how many owners will explore the latter is another question entirely.

Braking options split between standard iron discs measuring 420 mm front and 370 mm rear, and optional Carbon Silicon Carbide ceramics measuring 440 mm and 410 mm respectively. The front ceramic disc ties for the largest fitted to any production car. Calipers come in black, red, or grey as standard; Mulliner will paint them in three additional colours for those who consider brake callipers a personality trait.

The Dynamic Symphony

Bentley faced a genuine existential question with its first EV: what does silence sound like? The answer, apparently, is a drummer, a violist, and a bassist. The Dynamic Symphony is not synthesised. Real instruments were recorded, layered, and mapped to torque demand and vehicle speed, with deliberate imperfections left intact to avoid the smoothness of electronic generation. The low-frequency character rises in Sport mode and can be silenced entirely for those who prefer the hush.

The V8’s rhythmic signature was identified as the core of Bentley’s aural identity, and the symphony works to evoke that pulse without directly mimicking it. Even ancillary sounds received the artisan treatment. The indicator click derives from a hammer striking leather in Crewe’s upholstery workshop. Touchscreen confirmations and digital assistant prompts originate from a struck crystal glass. Someone, somewhere, spent months deciding exactly which hammer and which leather.

Audio hardware scales from a 620W sixteen-speaker base system to a 1 780W Naim installation with twenty-eight speakers, seat shakers, front headrest speakers, and Dolby Atmos 7.1.

The Template for What Follows

Bentley has been explicit that the Torcal establishes the template for all future Crewe products regardless of powertrain. Design, technology, craftsmanship, materials, sustainability for all future models take root here. The electric platform is not a departure from Bentley identity but the mechanism for its continuation.
