We need no convincing that the SUV/crossover trend has firmly entrenched itself in the minds of new car buyers. Traditional hatchbacks and sedans are overlooked in favour of models with raised ground clearance and more butch appearances. Even further evidence debuted today in the shape of the Audi A1 Citycarver.

Distinct appearance

The Audi A1 Citycarver is a new derivative added to the company’s existing A1, small hatchback, line-up. It is based on an A1 but has distinctive looks and an additional 40 mm of ground clearance. A new suspension accounts for 35 mm of the raise, the remainder due to larger wheels compared with the A1 Sportback, starting at 16 inches in diameter; the largest size on offer is 18 inches.

Several design cues align the Citycarver to Audi’s SUV portfolio, such as the octagonal Singleframe grille, sculpted honeycomb insert in matt black and underbody protection painted in stainless among them. The wheel arches and redesigned side sills feature add-on parts in a contrasting colour. Buyers can also option a contrast roof in either black metallic or grey metallic.

Audi chic

Audi designs and produces some of the nicest interiors in the new car space. The Audi A1 Citycarver benefits from the design and material expertise applied elsewhere in its range. A driver-oriented control panel features a digital instrument cluster that has sharp colour graphics. The vents, the centre console and the doors sport accent surfaces in mint, copper, orange or silver-grey.

In addition to the basic interior, there are three equipment lines to choose from: advanced, design selection and S line. The S line offers customers the choice between seat covers in cloth/synthetic leather or Alcantara/synthetic leather. The interior design selection includes the contour/ambient lighting package.

Audi SA has not confirmed the A1 Citycarver for local introduction, stating that the new derivative is still under consideration for SA. The local media spokesperson did confirm that the new A1 will make its debut at the upcoming Festival of Motoring taking place at Kyalami in a few weeks.
