Hardcore tifosi will be familiar with the racing versions of the Ferrari mid-engined V8 supercar, the 488 GT3 and 488 GTE. But the Maranallo-based firm has one more variant up its sleeve in the form of the 488 GT Modificata, a track special not weighed down by regulations.
The new limited edition 488 GT Modificata uses the information gleaned from Ferrari’s campaigns in the World Endurance Championship and GT racing through the 488 GTE and 488 GT3 respectively, to put together the ultimate track package. Together the two racing models the 488 GT Modificata gets its blueprints from have secured over 350 wins and 630 podiums at the most prestigious racing events in the world.
Big power, big brakes, big downforce
As its name suggests, there’s been significant tinkering, with the twin-turbocharged V8 no longer subject to the FIA’s rules and regulations. After significant remapping and the use of racing engine componentry, maximum power is now around the 515 kW mark. The manufacturer says that its optimised gear ratios and carbon fibre clutch help transfer torque to tarmac.
Ferrari’s also ensured that the 488 GT Modificata benefits from revised aerodynamics that generate more downforce at the front end without increasing drag, with the rear wing more sensitive to adjustments – with the potential of over 1000 kg of downforce at 230 km/h. The ABS system found in the 488 GT3 Evo 2020 was optimised for the Modificata, which also uses the same calipers found in the championship winning cars – all of which was developed in partnership with braking specialists Brembo.
Befitting of its track-only status, the 488 GT Modificata is also equipped with V-Box and Bosch data-logging equipment, which allows the owner to download telemetry directly onto a USB stick after circuit sessions. There’s also high-resolution rear-view camera and TPSM system for you to monitor tyre pressure and temperature.
The 488 GT Modificata will be able to compete in Club Competizione GT events, an initiative that’s aimed at bring the Ferrari thoroughbreds back to five racetracks around the world specifically chosen to highlight the dynamic prowess of the Prancing Horse’s finest race-ready models.
